A Brief History of Artistic Swimming:

  • 1907  Australian Annette Kellerman, performing in a glass tank, attracts national attention at the New York Hippodrome as the first underwater ballerina.
  • 1915  Katherine Curtis, a student at the University of Wisconsin in America, experiments with diving actions and stunts in the water and in 1923 starts a water-ballet club at the University of Chicago. The group executes strokes, "tricks" and floating formations.
  • 1940  Esther Williams, U.S. freestyle champion and Olympic contender, popularizes water ballet with her performances in the San Francisco World's Fair Aquacade and subsequent MGM movies.
  • 1954  FINA, the international aquatics federation, is formed .... FINA makes synchronised swimming a competitive division of aquatics.
  • 1984 Synchronised swimming premieres at the Olympics in Los Angeles, California.
  • 2012 Great Britain take 6th place in the team event at the Olympics in London. 
  • 2014 FINA allows the inclusion of men/boys in international competitions (excluding the Olympics).
  • 2015 Bramcote AquaStars are formed!
  • 2017 FINA votes to change the official name of the sport to Artistic Swimming
  • 2022 Eve Young - Bramcote AquaStar - wins Silver Medal in Mixed Duet for GB at Junior World Championships
  • 2024 Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe win Silver Medal at Paris Olympics. A first for Great Britain in the sport!
